Look Good…Feel Better
I am sure many of you are aware October is breast cancer awareness month. But, did you know you can use your professional expertise to help the cause rather than lace up some running shoes for a 5K. If you are like me you probably consider running a widespread form of torture. Well great news the American Cancer Society (ACS) has put together a program called Look Good…Feel Better, no running required.
According to the ACS, “The Look Good...Feel Better program is a community-based, free, national service that teaches female cancer patients beauty techniques to help restore their appearance and self-image during chemotherapy and radiation treatments”.
This is where you licensed professionals come into play. “Our dedicated volunteers provide the remarkable insights, creativity, enthusiasm and dedication that make the Look Good…Feel Better program so meaningful to so many. It is our honor that such an inspiring, impressive group of women and men choose to give their time and caring on so many levels.
In fact, thousands of cosmetologists and other volunteers participate in LGFB group programs each year. All volunteer cosmetologists are trained and certified for LGFB locally by the American Cancer Society — and participate in annual update courses. Workshops are also offered at the local, state and national level to keep the program fresh and keep volunteers in touch with one another”, according to the LGFB website.
For more information on the program and how you can get involved, call
1-800-395-LOOK, or go to www.lookgoodfeelbetter.org.

Nail Technicians
Sanitation has definitely become a recent buzz word in the beauty industry. Violations are continuing to increase in salons across the country for improper sanitation practices. Nail techs concerns about how to keep clients happy and healthy and avoid costly fines are also on the rise.
If you have taken our sanitation course and would like additional information about nail guidelines and safety concerns check out our resources on CosmetologyCampus. Doug Schoon, Vice President of Science & Technology, Creative Nail Design said he would be happy to have CosmetologyCampus share the educational articles about the nail industry that he provided during a recent seminar.
There are eight documents provided. Some of the subjects covered are:
• Guidelines for disinfecting
• Facts about nail products
• Nail salon demographics
All of these articles were designed to further inform and educate nail technicians about today’s latest issues in the industry.

CosmetologyCampus joins PBA
If you have not checked out PBA yet you will be pleasantly surprised with all it has to offer. Their center for business education is a great supplement to the online continuing education courses offered on cosmetology campus. For cosmetology networking you can join their networking groups to discuss hot industry topics or even add your own existing group to their list. If laws concerning cosmetology licensing or any other industry laws remain a mystery to you the advocacy section of their website should answer your questions.
I just got my new PBA member packet in the mail and the beauty industry information is quite extensive. According to their website, “For the first time in 2007, PBA members receive a complimentary Green Book with their membership—a $225 value!” I have been perusing my copy of the Green Book all week and it is just one of the many tools any industry insider will want to take advantage of.

Summer Time in Illinois
That’s right; it’s that time again, the Illinois cosmetology license renewal period. If you are a cosmetologist or esthetician in Illinois the license renewal deadline is right around the corner, September 30th to be precise.
Prior to your license renewal you are required to complete cosmetology continuing education:
- cosmetologists 14 hours
- estheticians 10 hours
- nail technicians 10 hours
(Note: This renewal is Oct 31st on even years)
To ease the process of meeting requirements in time for the renewal deadline Illinois licensees can take half of their cosmetology ce courses online. CosmetologyCampus offers 5 hour and 7 hour course packages or individual courses and has a 24 hour support staff to assist you anytime at (866) 861-1985.
The Illinois license renewal period will officially begin July 2nd. The state licensing division said they will send postcards for the renewal mid to late July for cosmetologists and about the first week of August for estheticians. If your address has changed, go to https://www.idfpr.com/DPR/CHG_INFO/DEFAULT.asp to update your address with the licensing division. The license renewal fee is $50 and there is a $10 late fee if you miss the deadline.
For other cosmetology license renewal questions refer to the State of Illinois Division of Professional Regulation.

Are you going to waste $1,100 a month this year?
At least one salon owner can answer yes to this question. According to a news release from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation today a salon owner was fined $14,000 for over two dozen sanitation violations. TDLR conducted an unannounced inspection at 4 Tip to Toe in Beaumont, TX after receiving a customer complaint.
According to the report some of the violations included:
- 14 manicure stations with electric drills used for manicures not electric nail files designed for cosmetology
- A manicurist failed to disinfect a table and instruments between clients
- A manicurist cleaned nail service instruments in dirty water in a foot spa basin after a client soaked her feet
- The salon failed to keep records for cleaning and disinfection of whirlpool foot spas, as required
In the release TDLR’s executive director was quoted saying "It is very easy for an infection to be passed from customer to customer or from manicurist to customer if salon personnel fail to follow TDLR's sanitation guidelines. The guidelines were developed after close consultation with the Texas Department of Health, and we don't take violations lightly. Neither should anyone in the cosmetology industry. TDLR will not allow salons to place their customers' health in jeopardy."
All of the violations and fines incurred could have been avoided had sanitation and other regulations been followed. Texas law requires 4 hours of continuing education in sanitation for a cosmetology license renewal. This investigation is a significant example why sanitation is commonly required for continuing education. Be sure to pay close attention during your next sanitation course to avoid large fines and having your license put on probation.
Sign up for up to date news from TDLR via email at http://www.license.state.tx.us/newsletters/TDLRnotificationLists.asp and select cosmetology.
To take your next sanitation course online, go to http://www.cosmetologycampus.com/ and select the state where you hold your cosmetology license.

Beauty & Technology all in one!
On www.beautytech.com you can find all state licensing information for the cosmetology industry as well as booth rental information, IRS – tax help, products, educational ideas and information. Not only does the site have bonus information for nail technicians, it also has sections for stylists, estheticians, and salon owners.
My favorite feature is the abundance of message boards! You can find conversations on just about anything going on in the beauty industry. People often ask questions about new styles and products as well as how to handle certain clientele. This feature is a great support system for all the beauty industry workers out there.
Check out the site today, www.beautytech.com.
Till then stay beautiful…
